Block Island Recycling Management
Recycling 101 / Accepted Materials
PLASTIC
Recycle plastic containers up to 5 gallons
-Empty & Rinse
-Replace caps and lids before recycling
NO: straws, plastic bags, foam, containers from auto fluid, paint strippers, insecticides, pesticides, herbicides, coat hangers, compostable cups or containers that tear or shatter
METAL
Recycle metal cans, foil, and lids only
-Empty & Rinse
-Don’t crush cans flat
-Do bunch up foil
NO: frying pans, foil-plastic hybrids (examples: yogurt lids, juice pouches, chip and candy wrappers)
GLASS
Recycle glass bottles and jars only
-Empty & Rinse
-Remove metal caps and lids to recycle separately
NO: broken bottles or jars, drinking glasses
PAPER, CARDBOARD, CARTONS
Recycle paper and cardboard that is mostly clean and dry only
-Flatten cardboard
-Don’t bunch paper
-Empty & Rinse cartons
Tape, Labels, and Staples are okay
NO: sanitary paper (examples: napkins, tissues, paper towels), waterproof cardboard (examples: fridge/freezer boxes, coffee cups), other fiber materials (wood or textiles)
We also take:
- Appliances and scrap metal (washers, dryers, refrigerators, A/C units…etc.)
- Auto tires and batteries
- Motor oil and filters
- Yard trimmings
- Construction waste
- Freon
- Bicycles
- Electronics
- Furniture
- Mattress and box springs
